Earth Systems and Resources

 Earth Science Concepts

Geologic Time Scale
  • Plate Tectonics:The theory which explains how earth's crust is affected by the movement of rigid plates moving over the underlying panel.
  • Earthquakes:Shaking of the ground due to movement in earth's crust or volcanic activity.
  • Volcanism:The process of magma and gases coming from earth's interior to the surface.

 The Atmosphere
  • Approximately 78% of the atmosphere is Nitrogen, 21% is Oxygen and 1% is considered "other".
  • Weather and Climate:Weather includes temperature, rainfall, and humidity in the atmosphere. Climate is the weather in a particular area over a long period of time.
  • Coriolis Effect:The effect of moving objects in the northern hemisphere to the right, and to the left in the southern hemisphere.

Soil and Soil Dynamics

Rock Cycle
  • Soil is a mixture of minerals, water, air, organic material, and possible organisms. Soil is the base for plants to grow and be nutrient rich. Three main types of soil include:sand, silt, and clay. Clay is the best for water storage, due to its tiny particles.
